What Causes Lightheadedness, Ringing In Ears And Shallow Breathing?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Nov 2015
Question: I have symptoms of lightheadedness, ringing in ears, and shallow breathing 24 hours ago. Colors in vision, peripheral sparkles It was a cascading effets of the previous. Am 60 year old male, and took a viagra pill at 3am Monday morning. At nine, I had to lay down in a restaurant booth due to ears ringing, lightheadedness, and hyperventilating. My wife said I passed/out for about 10 seconds. Had feelings of panic and helplessness which didn't help. My wife put cold cloths on my forehead and had me sip some cold water, but it took from 9 to 1030 am before I could stand up again. I took two advil at 1015 am and then at 2pm, since the doctor's advice to my friend who can't take VIAGRA (we called him) is to take advil to countereffect the viagra head pain. I am worried that this may be more hypertension than viagra -- have taken this drug several times in last few years with no side effects. Had this same panic attack 3 months ago on the first day of work in a new job where I was in a close room with 30 other people and suddenly felt I had no air. My head also felt as if I had no pulse up there. They took me to the ER, with an EKG 10 leads or so, blood test, and they found nothing. My BP was 160 over 110 or 90, but they were'nt terribly excited. They monitored me for 1 hours then, and the doctor released me saying they could find nothing wrong and blood work was normal The restaurant activity was worse, and it could be because of where it happened. I take no medications except that I drink alcohol on the weekends ( 6-8 beers a day)
, and viagra when I want to have sex. I try to stay hydrated. What should I be looking for... Today it is now about 24 hours post the restaurant fainting spell, and I drank a cup of coffee and some yogurt, but I feel a touch of lightheadedness and laid down again.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms may be related to a low blood pressure caused by viagra.

All your symptoms seem to be related to a low blood pressure.

Viagra is a vasodilatatory drug, whose main effect is on the vessels of the penis.

Viagra is also known for her effect on decreasing blood pressure, as an adverse effect. This decrease in blood pressure is more prominent in elderly persons and when other drugs are used, especially nitrates , beta-blockers, etc.

Ibuprofen is a non steroidal antiinflammator, whose main effect is on the pain and inflammation. But it can also raise your blood pressure (like many other drugs of this class).

That is why it is recommended in case of headache related to viagra. It helps with the pain and raises blood pressure.

Anyway, I recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure different times during the day (usually in sitting position) and refer it to your GP.

If your blood pressure values are most of the time above 130/90mm Hg, you should discuss with your doctor on starting an antihypertensive therapy.

Hope to have been helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions, whenever you need!

Best regards,

Dr. Iliri
