Question: my granddaughter is 5 years old here lately she has been pooping in her pants. we thought it was just cause she need some mom an dad time cause she also has a little one year old sister. Her other grand mother is a RN an has worked in several medical fields. my granddaughter spent the night at her house last night an this morning she had to change her clothes she had poop in her pants again. She don't tell anyone when she does it or anything.. So her grandmother cleaned her up an her little booty was all red and rash so she put some ointment on it. then she noticed that her anus really wasn't closed like it should be it was more open. Could this be something wrong with her medically? I know the thoughts that are going through my head of someone touching her also. We are taking her to the dr. tomorrow. She also had large poop when she does use the bathroom in the potty. please help answer this question. Thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
needs to see doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.

I am very sorry that this is happening to her. There are several medical problems that can cause her to not be able to hold her stool. Some of them have to do with the spinal cord nerves and some with the anal sphincter the muscle that holds the anus closed. It is concerning that her grandmother felt that the anus was not closed as it should be. This is concerning for a medical problem.

You are correct also to be concerned about abuse and it is best to let the doctor know of your concern about this. Any kind of trauma to a child may cause incontinence of urine or stool. It is a possibility that she is doing it for attention but that is not very common and medical conditions must be ruled out first before you consider that option. You are doing the correct thing by taking her to the doctor for an exam.
