hi Dr my daughter is 2 years old and she had previously a febrile seizure. Today, I took her to the Dr 'coz she had fever for 24 hours and I always panic when she had it. he told me she had sinus infection n he prescribed antibiotic. then after I left her knees started to shake n she couldn't stand u, why did this happen?? is this a sign that a febrile seizure can happen again??

Hi,

Shaking at the knees and not able to stand may not necessarily be due to seizure.Seizure activity is more generalised with frequent jerks of both arms and legs with sympathetic effects like
salivation ,up rolling of eye balls with post seizure drowsiness.

In your child shaking could have been due to generalised weakness and fever. It does not have any correlation with the future episodes to come.

Bye

Pediatrician, Critical Care Dr. Tejas Shah's  Response
Thanks for your question here at HCM.

Children who had febrile seizures are at risk of having another episode upto around 5-6 years of age.

It is difficult to say with certainity without clinical examination that knee shaking was seizure or not.

Did it spread further? Was there any uprolling of eyes? Was she conscious during/after the episode? Did you notice any frothing in mouth? Did she wet herself?

Answers to these questions help us to determine whether it was seizure or not.

Points to remember:
1. She can have further seizures as febrile seizures are known to recur, upto a certain age (5-6 years as I mentioned).
2. Prompt treatment of fever is very vital
3. If there are frequent febrile seizures, you would need to discuss with your doctor about home treatment of seizures and primary care to be provided prior to getting medical help.

I hope I have been able to guide you further in this matter.
