3 Mths Baby Diagnosed With Craniosynthosis, Slight Brain Haemorrhage During Birth. Suggested Surgery. Opinion?

I am worried for my child as it has been diagnosed as having craniosynthosis and slight brain haemorrage during birth. She is currently around 3-1/2 months old and we have consulted 3 doctors and each of them are having differing opinions, some suggest immediate operation while others suggest to wait and watch.. we are thoroughly confused and need more opinion to help us in reaching a suitable decision. Please help. thanks

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your dilemma when you get different opinion. Craniosynostosis means premature fusion of the cranial bones. This will not give space for the brain to grow and then ultimately affect development of various faculties. As you mentioned that your daughter had haemorrhage at birth, MRI scan must have been done and what does that suggest. If the skull size is small due to smaller size of brain following haemorrhage then nothing needs to be done. However if the MRI shows fusion of the skull bones and normal brain size then surgical correction is warranted. The treating doctor shall take a decision based on the head circumference parameters, child's development and the MRI findings.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.
