Are Nightmares A Result Of This Narcotic Oxycodone?
Hi Dr. Rogala. I just had a partial hip replacement and an taking oxycodone with either a 10mg. dosage every 6 hrs. or a 5mg. dosage every 4 hrs. I am 4 days past surgery and I have started having very scary nightmares. Are nightmares a result of this narcotic?
Yes sir. While it is not a common side effect from Oxycodone, nightmare is certainly a well known side effect of Oxycodone and other opiates. Are you taking paracetamol on the side for your hip pain - if so, consider if you might take less Oxycodone to alleviate the side effects. Also - a common side effect of Oxycodone is constipation. Make sure you are well treated for this side effect, as it can be debilitating in elderly patients.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
