Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Blind, Severe Profound, Dry Period, Sleep Pattern And Wetting Problems. Suggestions?
I am a special education teacher with a student who is 10, blind as well as severe profound. She is continent during the day but not at night. She does go through periods of remaining dry. When she wets, it is the entire bed, her body and hair. Dad tries to get her up at midnight to help. She also has sleep pattern problems with not being able to sleep regular hours regularly.
This girl may need medication to reduce enuresis. Drugs belonging to the anti-cholinergic category (such as oxybutinin) may help to start with. Eventually, she may need desmopressin to control the problem. Enuresis alarms are unlikely to help as she is mentally challenged. Lifting her at midnight is likely to be of temporary benefit. And the medicines (both those that I have written about) may also not work. This is going to be a difficult one to crack.
