Blocked Nose, Snoring, Yellowish Green Nasal Discharge. Prescribed Both Maxtra And Allegra. Can Both Be Taken Together?

Hello Doctor, Can Maxtra syrup and Allegra be given together? My son first was given Maxtra for running nose, then he started having blocked nose, mouth breathing, snoring. Then, he was advised to take Allegra for about 7 days, if the symptoms subsided then to be continued for 14days. On the eighth day, started with nasal discharge(yellowish to green in color). when approached an ENT, he was advised to take both maxtra and allegra. Now, at this moment, we are totally confused

Hi and thanks for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your child has been experiencing.

Maxtra and allergra should not be used together because they contain the same class of drugs. However, maxtra contains other active ingredients that help relief nasal congestion symptoms that allergra doesn't. This may put it higher than allergra. My advice, suspend allergra, continue maxtra and talk to your doctor about this.

From the flow of symptoms, this child has developed a bacteria superinfection and need antibiotics. Please, talk with your doctor to get this sorted because yellowish/greenish nasal discharge is highly suggestive. In addition, use normal saline to irrigate the nostrils of the child as many times as possible to clear off the secretions.

I hope you find this informative and helpful and provides enough information to make an informed decision. I wish your son a speedy recovery.
