Blood Test Shows That I Am In Menopause. US Shows Thickened Endometrium. Biopsy Normal. On Progesterone. Another US Needed?

My last period was Sept 12, 2012. Blood test showed in January that I was in menopause. Are you really considered in menopause if you have not gone a full year without a period? I had spotting in Feb, again in April at which point my doc ordered a US which showed thickened endometrium. She did a biopsy showing no cancer. She ordered progesterone to cause me to have a period in May & June. The day before I was to start the first round of pills, I had red blood on wiping. I had small periods in May, June with the pills. Then on Jul 28, I had brown blood spotting for 5 days. Doc wants another US. The question is - am I really considered in menopause even thought I have not hit the 1 yr mark? Also, is another US the right way to proceed?

Hi,
Since malignancy has been ruled out, the other most likely cause would be hormonal imbalance. Menopause may be considered to have set in if there are no periods naturally for six months. The presence of a thick endometrium indicates excessive estrogen production which is not the usual feature in menopause and this calls for further investigation and follow up. You should indeed proceed with a trans-vaginal sonogram, get a pap smear, complete hormonal profile and follow up. Hope you find this information useful. Wish you good health.
