Can Amox Tr-K CLV Medicine Increase The Sugar Level In Blood?

I am taking Amox Tr-K CLV for an upper respiratory infection. I am diabetic and check my sugar 2x a day. Can this medication cause increased levels? My fasting morning levels have gone from 125-130 to 175-180. Also, can it cause heart palipitations?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Allergic reaction, gastritis, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are the most common side effects of Amoxycillin-Clavulanic acid combination. Elevated blood sugar levels or heart palpitations may not be directly caused by the drug. The stress of infection may itself cause raised sugar levels. Kindly check your ECG to assess your cardiac status.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
