Can Mirena Coil Cause Itchy Rashes On Thighs, Armpits And Under Breasts?
Hello :)
I just had my first Mirena coil fitted, not for contraception but for very heavy periods. I am 40 yrs old.
I have had my first period which was heavy but now I have stopped bleeding altogether. I bled for the first 3 weeks then had a period.
Only thing I can see that is wrong, is I have a very itchy skin rash on the inside of my thighs, tops of thighs, inside of my arms and under my breasts. Oh and on my stomach.
I live in Spain right now and at first thought it may be a heat rash, but now I don't think it is. I think it's a side effect.
Do you think i'm right?
Thanks :)
Jackie
An allergic reaction with Mirena device is a possibility like it is with any other medication. However, with an itchy rash that has lasted more than 3 weeks, I would like to make sure it is not a skin infection that might be causing the rash. Are you taking any other medicines? Have you changed the products being used for toiletries, bathing, skin creams etc?
if recent Mirena insertion seems to be the only underlying factor then there are two options to deal with it - a) use antihistamine like Piriton 4 mg three times a day for 5 days and see if it helps with symptoms b) remove the Mirena and see if the symptoms settle down. Heavy bleeding can be managed with oral medications such as tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid, if it still persists. Of course, alternative birth control will need to be planned after removal of device.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
