Can A Diabetic Patient Take Topiramate To Control Nocturnal Seizure Disorder?

My dgtr is 32 just dx with nocturnal seizure disorder and dx with Type 1 diabeties at age 21.She is taking insulin of course and is on Topiramate 25mg two tabs in a.m. and two in p.m.for seizures.She just had 3 more seizures on the medication.I know low bs can cause a seizure.What can be done to control the seizures ? She did see her neurologist today and will be seeing her endocrinologist soon.

Hello
Topiramate is a most potent antiepileptic drug and your daughter is using along insulin .
There is no direct interaction between topiramate and insulin .
Low blood sugar level ( hypoglycemia ) is a very serious side effect of insulin .
Since your daughter is using insulin from last 11 years so I think you know very well that hypoglycemia is most dangerous , so whenever your daughter feel such type of symptoms ( excessive sweating , palpitation , dizziness dryness in mouth ) immediately give her sugar syrup ( as this is the best treatment ) .
In my patient I have noted that after 11 year of treatment they know very well about hypoglycemia .
So whenever she inject evening dose of insulin take precaution about sugar level .This is the only precaution to be taken .
