Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Dear Sir/Mam,
Leg and ankle swelling can happen either because of trauma or because of hypertension. But swelling because of trauma usually appears immediately or one day after the trauma whereas the swelling due to hypertension can appear anytime. I suggest you follow strict lower limb elevation over pillows along with ice packs. Meeting an orthopaedic surgeon to rule out any muscular or bony injury is advisable. Hope this has helped you.
