Can Bupropion HCI Extended-release Tablets Cause Excessive Sleepiness?

I have been taking Bupropion Sr 150 mg tab for about 8 years, i have never had a problem with it, but about 2 years ago the doctor upped my meds because i needed it. I still had no problems and did much better. But about 2 weeks ago i got my px filled and all of a sudden i got to where i could not wake up in the morning and was sleeping most of the day? I have checked my medicine and the only thing i find different is it looks like my px is for Bupropion HCI Extended-release Tablets USP (SR). Before I had the Regular Bupropion SR 150 MG Tab. I am supposed to take Two tablets in the morning. (When i first started taking them years ago Two made me sick on my stomach so i was told to take 1 in the morning and 1 at lunch. That worked, I was fine) Can this be causing my problem of not being able to wake up? I have never taken the Extended-Relase tabs before?

Hi,
Bupropion usually creates more alertness in patients. The predominant side effect reported by patients is insomnia rather than sleepiness. But there are a subgroup of patients who do report excessive sleepiness due to bupropion.
I would recommend you to switch back to normal Bupropion SR tablets and look for the symptoms. Extended release tablets delivers more quantity of dose over time that could have been the reason for your sleepiness as the dose would be reduced as compared to normal SR tablets.
You can discuss the above points with your doctor. Thanks for writing into Healthcaremagic. Have a nice day.
