Can Intake Of Medication Having HCG Hormone Show Positive Pregnancy Result?

I have done 3 positive pregnancy tests in the last few days, but I am not convinced that the result is correct because a month ago I had a false positive test. I am wondering if the medication I am taking has the HCG hormone, which could be giving me a false positve result. I am currently taking 75mg of Cytalopram and multi-vitamin tablets..

Hi,

Yes, a false-positive pregnancy test can occur with medications having hCG as well as certain other medications.

Routine home pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in a urine sample.

So, the intake of medications containing hCG can show a false positive pregnancy test.

Besides, there is also a documented evidence of antidepressant medication citalopram causing a false positive pregnancy test.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
