Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son found a red worm moving about the toilet bowl in the toilet water (his toilet). It was about the thickness of pencil led, and approximately 4 to 5 inches in length. He called me to look at it. The toilet water was clean. However, he had just had a bowl movement. I have been giving him stool softener pills, as his stools are so hard, long and large that he often plugs the toilet. Does he have a worm problem? Or, did this worm find its way thru the plumbing?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. In such a situation wherein there is a worm in the toilet seat, you should have sent the worm to the lab to get confirmed whether this is from the stool or something that found its way up in the toilet seat. Anyway, the best course now is as follows: Get the stool sample checked for three days. Give him the medications for worms. Mild laxatives can be given and to watch the stool and toilet for the worms. Once any of these finds the worms or its ova and cysts, get your son the full and repeated courses of medicines to get a cure. Also needed is paring of nails, washing the hands with soap and water every time he uses toilet or comes from outside. Also get all the family members treated for worms. Stop consuming anything from outside, use only fresh homemade foods.
