Can Severe Acid Reflex Be Due To Large Hiatal Hernia?

My daughter has a very large hiatal hernia and she has had sudden onset of severe acid reflux. She's asking if this is due to the hernias and since it is so severe and sudden should she go to the er? She was told over a year ago that the hernia was life threatening

Hi,
Yes, hiatal hernia can cause acid reflux.
She can take omeprazole and antacids for relief.

If there is no relief and the pain persists, then you can take her to ER to look for other causes of chest discomfort.

I hope that answers your question.
Regards,
Dr.R.K
