I took my 7 month old son to the beach for the first time today. Temp was 80 with low humidity. Was under an umbrella all day, but still the beach will take the energy right out of any of us. He didn t feed as much as he usually does. I nurse but also supplement formula when he s too distracted to feed, like today when he was busy looking around instead of concentrating on my boob. So I m sure he was a little dehydrated. Dropped off friends who had accompanied us to the beach. Gave him a quick bath, a feed & jammies went on & at 7:45 put him in the car to go home. Regular bedtime is around 8:30. I knew he was exhausted. Eyes were red & he was fussing before we left. Put him in the car seat & he started to cry. Hard. He s not a crier at all & figured he d be asleep in the matter of minutes. His cry sounded distressed so I pulled over thinking maybe a toy was in his car seat & jabbing him. Nothing. Put him back in & off I went. He was howling. Then started to cough & sounded like he was choking & couldn t catch his breath. I turned the car around & went back to my friends. He was breathing very short breaths & was screaming. Got him out of the car & held him close while whispering & reassuring him. He was breathing short breaths & his head was, not sure if I d go as far as saying convulsing, but was twitching. Was very nervous about his breathing so I had Johncarlo drive me to the hospital while I held him in the backseat. Only 3 blocks, I wouldn t put him in danger of riding him without a car seat if I wasn t freaking out myself. By the time we got to the hospital he was calm. We parked, I rocked him for a few minutes & held him, after a few minutes put him in his car seat in the stroller & walked him until he fell asleep. By this time was 8:30. Being my first baby & first real scare, I am laying in bed, my mind going 1,000 miles an hour. I m thinking he was overtired. Probably a little dehydrated. Drained from the sun & cried himself into hyperventilation . He s been asleep for hours & is sleeping as he always is. His breathing is totally normal, he s not got a temperature, he s squeaking & sighing & all the usual baby sleep noises. I d like a little peace of mind before I am able to sleep myself. Do you agree he was probably hyperventilating?
