Child Has Flaky And Red Eye. No Swelling, Redness, Or Pain. Okay To Appy Hydrocortisone?

Hello. I'm a RN & work in ICU so I, of course, try to figure things out at home first before physically going to the doctor. I, however, work with adults, so some things with my children are out of my realm of experience. My two year old has one eye that is flaky and red underneath. It is not swollen, she has NOT lost her lashes, there is NO drainage or redness to the sclera, she c/o NO pain, and there is NO evidence of itching. It started in the outside corner of the eye two weeks ago (the day before I took her to her two year old well check), but has slowly spread toward the inside corner so it's now red & mildly flaky under the whole lash line. I pointed it out to the practicioner, but she dismissed it...it was rather a small patch at the time. Is it ok to apply hydrocortisone cream this close to the eye?

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

The description provided by you most likely suggests seborrhoeic dermatitis. It shall be better to discuss with your doctor or ophthalmologist and start treatment accordingly. Yes, you can apply hydrocortisone cream and once the lesion improves you can dilute the cream before applying.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

This flaky rash is looking like dermatitis mostly a patch of seborrheic dermatitis.

But any skin condition requires physical examination to diagnose the problem.

I advise you not to apply the steroid cream before consulting the doctor as it will mask the underlying skin problem and make it difficult for the diagnosis.

Therefore I advise you to consult the dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
