Child Suffering From Fever, Headache And Chills, Given Advil. Suggestion?
My 4 yr old has a temperature of 103.6F. She was complaining of headaches and chills. Then she vomited. I gave her a bath for about 10 minutes. Then I gave her some Advil fever medicine for children and some water to drink. She is asleep and breathing heavily right now but her temperature isn t going down. it s still in the 103F range. Should I take her to the ER?
Hi,
Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic,
Your child seems to have a viral fever.
You can continue Advil in prescribed dose for fever.
As there is high grade fever, give tepid sponging with luke warm water till the fever decreases.
Monitor her temperature.
Try to give plenty of oral fluids to maintain her hydration.
Consult your Pediatrician as early as possible for the examination and for appropriate treatment.
Hope I have answered your query.
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.
You have mentioned that your child has been running with high temperature of 103.6 F associated with head ache, chills and 1 episode of vomiting. Since the fever did not come down with Advil (Ibuprofen), and the child is breathing heavily, I would suggest you to seek medical help and see a pediatrician as early as possible.
Usually children below 5 years are always at risk of developing seizures with high grade temperature. So it is very important to bring down the temperature with proper medications as well as cold water sponging. If fever doesn’t respond to above mentioned measures its better to
seek medical help.
Sometimes, the symptoms of fever, headache and vomiting could be the early signs of serious infections like meningitis. So, you have to be watchful for danger signs such as behavioral abnormalities / disorientation, neck stiffness, poor feeding, continuous crying, etc.
Wish you all the best.
