Confused, Untalkative, No Smiling And Withdrawal Symptoms. Using Sertraline, Neurontin, Methadone, Zanaflex, Baclofen And Trilafon. Side Effects Of Medicines?

My brother, age 51, has a Spinal Cord injury from 2008 and is currently recuperating from his second leg amputation this year. He was given phenergan for nausea and it really did a number on him. He became withdrawn, quite unlike his usual self. He takes several drugs on a regular basis. Among them are: sertraline, protonix, neurontin, methadone, zanaflex, baclofen and trilafon. Would interactions with any of these drugs cause the symptoms I mentioned?

Dear friend,

I am Dr. (Col) R Karanwal, M.D. (Internal Medicine), Consultant Physician, for your assistance.

Thanks for reposing your faith in me and post your query on this website. I fully appreciate your concerns.

Given the traumatic phase which your brother has passed through, he has gone into depression with consequent withdrawal.

So, there are two possibilities :

- inadequate dose of anti-depressants or,
- Reduced blood levels of serteraline due to drug interaction with methadone.

I suggest that you consult a qualified Psychiatrist who will evaluate your brother and prescribe appropriate medicines.

Please feel free to revert back to me in case of further clarifications, if any.

I am confident that you will benefit from the advice.

May I assure you that I am always available for your assistance. My endeavor would always be to give you a sound medical advice, to the best of my knowledge and vast experience.

HAVE A NICE DAY AND A SPEEDY RECOVERY.

Fond Regards,

Dr.(Col) R Karanwal
