Could Bloody Ring Around Belly Button Be Related To Hernia?

I was diagnosed with a physical exam with an umbilical hernia about 6 months ago. It started to become Very painful a couple days ago. Cannot touch anywhere near it. I made an appointment with a surgeon to tell me what the next step is. However last night I washed the inside, carefully and not too deep as it hurts, and today i got home and i have a bloody crusty smelly ring around the outside of my belly button. Is this related to the hernia?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The bloody ring around the belly button is suggestive of acute bacterial infection with the smelly crusty discharging condition.

The hernia of umbilicus has nothing to do with the causation of the current infection stage, though it can hamper the hernia symptoms as well.

Thorough and meticulous wound infection control with culture sensitive antibiotics are strongly recommended, local dressing care is a must.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
