Could Bruising And Lump Formation On Knee After An Injury Denote Blunt Trauma?

I fell 6 days ago twice on the ice. My R knee took the brunt both times. On the inside of knee cap is a soft knot or lump w/bruise over top. The knot/lump hasn't gone down in 6 days. The knot/lump is numb, I touched it & was pinching. No feeling, the last pinch I heard a crunch sound from knot. Is it blunt trauma or more?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From the given description, I suspect that you have developed a Hematoma (blood clot) at the point of injury to the knee joint. These hematoma's are usually self limiting and will resolve spontaneously within 2-3 weeks with no further consequences.

The general treatment guidelines are as follows -

- Protect the injured area from further injury by using a support or splint
- Rest the injured joint and avoid involving in any activity that produces pain
- Apply ice wrapped in a damp towel to the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours during the day
- Use an elastic compression bandage over the swollen area to limit any further swelling
- Keep the injured area raised and supported on a pillow to help reduce swelling.
- Use simple analgesics like aleve or advil as needed.

Hopefully, your symptoms should resolve with the above measures. If not, consult an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation and management.

Good luck
