Could Severe Diarrhea Be Due To Gastrointestinal Virus And Does It Stay For A Longer Period?

My 20 month old daughter has been throwing up and has had diarrhea on and off since February 21. She threw up again on Feb 27 and on the 28th with diarrhea. She was fine again until Monday, March 3rd and then threw up at 5:00a.m. I took her to the clinic and they said it was a gastrointestinal virus. She was fine again until March 6 and then threw up at 6:00 a.m. and diarrhea again today. Is it possible for the virus to last this long? She has no fever and has been eating and drinking just fine.

Hello,

The symptoms of your daughter seem to be related to reinfection.

I recommend to give her over the counter option such as Imodium for diarrhea.

I also recommend to give her daily probiotics and keep her hydrated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
