Could Taking Biotin Cause Clear Mucous Rectal Discharge?

I began taking 5,000mcg of Biotin daily on December 25 (it is now January 2nd). I have been having abdominal pain and on at least two occasions, clear mucous rectal discharge. Could this be because of the Biotin? I started taking it, on my own, due to thinning hair and hair loss. I am a 39 year old female with no other health issues. Not on any other medication.

Hi,

Biotin supplement is a safe drug and usually does not cause any severe side effects. Gastric upset and skin rashes are some of the common side effect. Biotin may not cause rectal discharge. Hence, other causes such as constipation should be ruled out.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
