Could The Muscle Cramps And Joint Pains Be Due To Deficiency Calcium?

One year ago, I went on a wieght loss program. I did extensive walk and jogging. I cut down on fats, but made one mistake.. I reduced my calcium intake (dairy products and most calcium rich food in my country contain a lot of fat)

Diagnosed with hypocalcaemia, I was prescribed calcium supplements (1000mg) and 2 glass of milk everyday. I recovered in a month (sypmtoms including muscle cramps and joint pain disappeared). Now i regularly take milk and calcium but:

When I miss a glass of milk for 2 consequitive days, symptoms reappear. I then take milk again and with a day the symptoms are gone.

My questions:

Is calcium still too low in my bones?

How to replenish 'lost calcium" in my bones?

Hello, I cannot tell you if calcium is too low in your bones, but you can have a simple bone density screening test to show if you are experiencing bone loss. Ask your doctor for an order if you are concerned about osteopenia or osteoporosis. Then, generally, along with a good diet, a calcium supplement is prescribed along with vitamin D3 (general range of supplementation in US is 1,000 mg) which helps the body absorb calcium into the bones. Then to balance things out, your diet needs to be high in magnesium or you may experience restless legs or muscle spasms. You can either increase high magnesium food in your diet or take 200 mg/day if you have any of the noted symptoms. Good luck and I hope I have given you enough to think about and hope in some way, it helps. Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN

Dear thanks for the question

Yes your doubt is true low calcium is responsible for muscle cramps and joint pains. You still develop symptoms when you miss milk, that proves that calcium is still low or it is at the lower end of normal.

I advise my patients to follow following in such case
1 milk and milk products (butter is very rich in calcium)
2 calcium tablet (shelcal)
3 weight bearing exercises will stimulate bones and their calcium uptake will improve.

I hope i have clarified your queries. Do write for follow up queries. Please rate my reply. I wish you good health. Thank you.
