Diarrhea, Blood In Stools, Dizziness, Groin Pain, Fever. How Can Be Helped?
email: YYYY@YYYY My friend who is 51 years old, has had very bad diahrea for about a day and a half. This last bout was all bloody. He hasn't had any dif foods and we both had the same things to eat during the last 3 or 4 days. He has had a few "dizzy" spells, like he was going to pass out today, even while on the toilet. Sometimes he feels like a "hernia" pain in his groin, but has been able to push the knot back in. He says this pain is in his lower gut area causing a fever at times. Is there anything we can do to help him at home now, so as to not rush to the ER? What do you think it is? Thanks for your time and any advice would be welcome. Kathy
Hello and welcome to HCM, A history of diarrhea with passage of blood in stools is suggestive of dysentery. Dysentery is caused by bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal tract. Associated dizzy spells and fever further suggest bacterial infection. A stool examination -routine and microscopy needs to be done to look for evidence of infection. If there is evidence of infection, appropriate anti-microbial needs to be started for it. Pain in the groin along with some tissue that can be pushed back is suggestive of uncomplicated hernia. You need to consult your surgeon for clinical examination. Hernias can be complicated by strangulation which can lead to decreased blood supply to the contents of the hernia and gangrene.
