Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I just had a minor heart attack, one sten was inserted. I am very sexually active. I noticed that one of the medication I am taken (metoprolol) has slow down my erection. Can I replace this medication with another medication so I wont have this side effect?
metoprolol is a beta-blocker drug. Beta-blocker drugs have shown efficacy in reducing death rates after myocardial events. So taking a beta-blocker is essential and cannot be avoided. Unfortunately they do have some side-effects like the erection problem you've mentioned. Perhaps your doctor could try another beta-blocker instead of metoprolol but be informed that all beta-blockers cause erection problems. Perhaps a dosage change could be tried as well, but you'll have to talk with your treating cardiologist for that.
So in conclusion I wouldn't recommend replacing this drug category but you can try (with your cardiologist's consent) another drug or try a dose reduction, to see what happens.
I hope I've helped! If you'd like further information about this drug, you can contact me again and I'll be glad to help.
Kind Regards!
