Does Negative HIV Test Suggest Absence Of The Disease?

Hello doc,

im so scared of HIV and its affecting my life now.

i used to have multiple sexpartners thru the years but never did bareback sex. June last year i tested negative in HIV 1 and 2.

and then last december to early january i had sever sore throat. after antibiotic medication it stopped but my left tonsil remained enlarged. i didnt get much fever. just mild one which only lasted a day or two.

and then later January, i had sex ( jan 25th, after my sore throat was gone). we didnt know that the condom broke so i panicked and told him we should both get tested immediately. we got tested on the same day, both negative.

now, its February 25th. Last week my tonsillitis returned and the redness stopped after a week of clindamycin. But the left tonsil is still enlarged ( it shrunk a bit). But I also developed some sores now on my gums ( it could be HIV or maybe because of too much antibiotics I have used for the month?)

it could be lymphoma or HIV im so scared…but if it has to be any of the 2 I hope its lymphoma, the lesser of the 2 evils.

My questions:

1)     will it be possible that any 1 of us was on window stage that’s why we tested negative? Could we possibly transmit/get hiv if we both tested negative on the same day we had sex?

2)     I didn’t have any flu like symptoms. No other symptoms actually. My blood tests shows normal blood counts, even the peripheral blood tests shows every thing is normal. I have slight elevation of neutrophil, 10.8 versus the normal 10.

3)     Im planning to get tested again for hiv next week. If I still get negative, would that be concslusive that im free of HIV? Or maybe the biopsy of my tonsil would still show the real status?

Thank you and more power!

thank you for query.the dates are too old to comment on tests.it is not clear about the type of tests done in both.If either of them is in window period they can transmit the infection to other by sexual route.Flu symptoms are non specific and may or may not be due to HIV.Blood counts given are normal you need not worry.neutrophil rise is non specific infection.for the days mentioned you can go with ELISA test now it will be reliable at this time. You can get back directly to me with details . I will try to help you.Dr Bharatesh D Basti Dermatologist and Venereologist.

Thank you for query.yes it is possible for either of them to be in window period. If so either of them can transmit HIV to other.so chances of transmission is possible if negative also.it also depends on what test.IF PCR done after 10 days may suggest negative for HIV viral RNA.the symptoms are non specific and need not be related to HIV.It can be due to simple URI spread by Kiss or from other people also.neutrophil elevation is nonspecific and due to any infection. The dates are too old to suggest testing i Suppose.you can get a appropriate test done depending on time interval from exposure ,to allay fears of HIV.You can get back to me for any clarifications.to Dr Bharatesh Devendra Basti Dermatologist and Venereologist
