Does Removal Of Part Of Thyroid Cause Weight Loss?

Hello,

My daughter is 15, she has nodules on her thyroid. We had the biopsy and they are not cancerous. She will be having surgery to remove one side of the thyroid. She is overweight, but her thyroid function is normal. Once, removed is there a chance of weight loss?

Hello,
I can understand your concern regarding to your daughter's health.
The removal one lobe of the thyroid gland may cause hypothyrodism or under active thyroid, as the remaining glandular tissue left may not compensate the function of the thyroid gland.
This can be manifested with weight gain, but after starting levothyroxine orally (to substitude the function on the gland) everything will get back to previous situation.
