Had Diverticulitis. Diagnosed For IBS And Undergone Colonoscopy. Had Chronic Diarrhea. What Can I Try Besides Fiber?

Hi. I'm 56 yrs old woman. I have had diverticulitis before and it at the same time 15 yrs ago and had two polyps removed then. I have also had collogenous colitis before and have been diagnosed for IBS. I have had 3 Colonoscopies total where no more polyps have been found. I have had cronic diharrea for two months now, usually kinda yellow and a couple times a soft stool of yellow. Is there anything I can try besides fiber con which may help a little.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Since you have been having continuous diarrhea, without alternating constipation, I feel that your problem is due to collagenous colitis.

You may therefore give a trial of a COMBINATION of following drugs :-

* Metronidazole 250mg thrice daily for 7 days
* Pepto-Bismol tablets - 2 tablets four times daily (total of 8 tablets/day) for 08 weeks.
* Prednisolone (5mg) 6-8 tablets/day for 2 weeks and then reduce the dose by 2 tablets every 5 days.

I am sure that you will have a complete response.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he agree with me, and will prescribe suitable treatment as advised.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” rating to my answer, to encourage all doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.

Fond regards and have a nice day
