Had Muscle Spasm In Leg Suspected In Anterio Tibialis Muscle. How To Overcome This?

Hi,
I have been waking up in the middle of the night with muscle spasms in my left leg. However, they are not in the typical gastroc muscle. The spasms are in the, I think, anterio tibialis. When I got the spasm, my ankle went into inversion. The other time just my great toe went into extension. It seems like an odd muscle to go into spasms. Is there anything I can do? Thank you very much for your help.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM
Taking mild pain killers and muscle relaxants will bring a short term relief. Regular stretching exercise will be helpful.
You can do a hot fomentation and apply a local analgesic gel on the area to relieve the spasm.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and informative and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The cause of your muscle spasm or cramp could be dehydration, electrolyte depletion or muscle fatigue.

The general measures useful to control muscle spasms/cramps are
* Immediately stop the activity that caused the cramp
* Gently stretch and massage the cramping muscle
* Hold the involved joint in stretched position untill the cramp stops
* Always do some form of warming up before going onto a vigorous exercise
* Take foods rich in Potassium like bananas, Potatoes and dried fruits
* Also calcium rich foods like seafood & fish, almonds, flax seeds, oats will help in preventing muscle cramps

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
