Have Stomach Issues, Upset, Blood In Feces. Is It Urgent I Visit A Physician?

I have had stomach issues since I was 15 years old. I am now 33 so it has been approx. 18 years. I have an upset stomach about once a week and over the last 2 weeks I may be seeing a little bit of blood in my feces. Is it urgent I visit a physician? There is no colon cancer in my family and the blood mixed in with feces may have started many years ago but it is possible that I have only recently started paying attention. What would you advise?

Dear friend, welcome and thanks for entrusting your query here at Healthcaremagic!
I am Dr. Prasad Akole (Critical Care Expert- http://bit.ly/Dr-Prasad-Akole) and am glad to address to your query here.

Blood in stools needs investigation urgently, as increased bleeding can pose a risk.

Is the blood fresh and drops in the commode or is it streaky on the stools?
Do you pass jet black stools? is there pain on defecation?
IS there any abdominal pain, lump, heartburn?
Was there any vomiting, diarrhea and constipation?
Do you feel giddy?

You need a thorough evaluation for any gastro-intestinal pathology like growths, ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease like Crohn’s/ Ulcerative colitis, infections etc.

A hemogram, stool routine and occult blood, GI endoscopy, per rectal exam are needed. Please get a gastroenterologist’s opinion.

I hope to have answered your query satisfactorily. I would be glad to answer any further queries. Take care and please keep me informed of your progress at http://bit.ly/Dr-Prasad-Akole
Good Luck!
