Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I suppose you must have confused the conjugate pneumococcal vaccine with your friend's disease (pneumococcal pneumonia?). The elderly are particularly affected by infections and may appear to be very weak like if they've had a stroke. An infection like pneumococcal pneumonia (I assume that this is his case), is quite serious and most patients require hospitalization. You can help by making sure he drinks enough fluids (to avoid dehydration and renal damage) and that he gets appropriate treatment. Such diseases require careful and close monitoring by a doctor. Besides that you can't do much. Drug treatment would have to do its part now.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
