How Should Jaw Injury Pain Causing Movement Problems Be Treated?
I fell this morning on a run to work. I put out my hands to catch the fall, but still hit my chin requiring 4 or 5 stitches. Later today at lunch time, I had difficulty chewing. I had pain on the left side of my jaw just below the ear. As I finished my lunch the pain decreased, but at supper I started out with the pain again. Should I put alternate hot and cold packs on it? The jaw does not appear broken, but maybe a little misaligned. What do you suggest? My wife wonders about TMJ.
In hitting your chin on the pavement, you most likely bruised the tissue in and around the TMJ. Chewing, yawning, opening your mouth will probably cause pain for the next 3-5 days. Ice in the evening, heat in the morning is a good routine. Your bite may feel off for several days depending on the amount of trauma. A visit to your dentist for an x-ray to confirm your jaw is not broken is recommended.
Thanks for your query, I have gone through your query. The pain in the ear region can be because of the fractured condylar bone of the mandible. Consult a oral physician and get a radiograph done like OPG to rule out fracture. The other possible cause for pain in front of the ear can be disc displacement in the jaw joint secondary to trauma. If there is a fractured condyle, then it has to be treated with surgery by plating. If it is a disc displacement, then You can take anti inflammatory drugs like piroxicam 20mg twice daily on first day and twice daily on next 6 days. You can also take muscle relaxants like chlorzoxazone. You can give hot fomentation over the joints. Do not eat hard things, do not open your mouth too wide. take soft diet. I hope my answer will help you, take care.
