How To Lower Blood Potassium Levels?

My mother age 78 has had her last 2 blood work reports show a potassium level of 5.7. She drinks lots of water and I have given her a list of low potassium foods........how can she get her level down? She is due for another blood drawing in a week.......she has no health problems and no heart palpitations or dizziness....she is 5'4" and weighs about 180 and eats healthy and no bad habits...... I am very concerned about her.....thank you for your help..... Jenean

Hello ,The normal range of potassium in blood is 3.7 to 5.2 mEq/L.,your mothers levels are slightly high .Potassium is a mineral which is needed in the body for your muscles and heart to work properly. The amount of potassium in the blood is normally controlled by your kidneys When your kidneys are not working properly or if you are taking certain medications the potassium level in the blood can rise..You can reduce in take of bananas, avocado, dried fruit Vegetables which have not been boiled,Starchy food,Potato crisps/snacks, nuts, chocolate, fudge. Biscuits and cakes containing lots of nuts, dried fruit, chocolate,Coffee, malted milk drinks. You can take Corn or maize based snacks, popcorn, mints, boiled / chew / jelly sweets, marshmallow, biscuits and cakes not containing dried fruit, nuts and chocolate,Tea, herbal tea, squash/cordial, mineral water, flavored water, fizzy drinks
