How To Treat Choking Sensation And Soreness In The Throat In A Dementia Patient?

My 96 year-old father has dementia and has a feeding tube which we use bolo. He has begun sucking his tongue almost constantly. He has not be able to digest his former formula so they changed it to Jevity 1.5 after I told them that the Jevity 1.2 was easier for him to digest. When he chews his tongue, he causes a lot of slava to form in his mouth, he chokes and we have to suction him. His throat is sore and I would like to know what to do to ease his discomfort and perhaps solve his problem

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

He is aspirating so you need to take care about it. Elevate the head end of the bed , avoid excessive feeding, use ryles tube for feeding. He may need antibiotics for aspiration pneumonia. So please consult your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.
