Is Meftal P Syrup Safe For Kids?

Hi Doctor, I want to know how safe is the Meftal P syrup to the kids. My daughter is 2.5 years old. She is running fever. Doctor suggested Meftal P and Calpol alternately every 3 hrs and continue the cycles if the temp is not staying at 98.4 in a 24 hrs cycle. Just worried after reading the side effects, is it safe to give like this. We have given her already for 2 days. Please help us to understand

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Both paracetamol and meftal are very commonly used in children to control fever and pain, paracetamol being the safest one. But sometimes, high grade fever will not respond to paracetamol and need more potent antipyretic like meftal.

However, we cannot give either of these drugs every 3 hours. Maximum we can give is paracetamol every 6 hours and meftal every 8 hours, beyond this, it is to be avoided. Usually in such situations, I advise my patients to give paracetamol every 6 hours, and to give meftal only if fever is not coming down after 1 hour of paracetamol.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
