Is Northera(droxidopa)helpful For Post Prandial Hypotension

Hi Dr Grief. My husband 84. he s suffered PD for 6yrs with hypertension which controlled by tablets , but in the morning BP still higher between 190/170-100/90mmHg. About near one year he feels dizzy after food as well as found BP down 120/100-80/60mmHg.then must lay down on the bed for 1 to 2 hrs.Do you have a research for this kind condition? Can we use Northera(droxidopa) for postprandial hypotension? Looking forward to your early reply. Many thanks. Sincerely yours Li Yi Qi

Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. He seems to be suffering from swallow syncope.
2. During food ingestion, the vagus nerve is stimulated resulting in bradycardia and fall of blood pressure.
3. Anticholingergic medications maybe helpful. Vagotomy may be necessary, if serious.
4. Northeral is usually used for postural hypotension and not post prandial hypotension.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
