Is Alcohol Consumption Safe While On Vancomycin Hydrochloride?
I ve been through one round of antibiotics for an oral antibiotic-induced C Difficil Colitis. It had a clear prohibition for alcohol, such as wine. The new antibiotic, Vancomycin Hydrochoride, does not have any labels that say No Alcohol , but I want to be sure.
Hello, Sorry to hear about your c diff infection. Alcohol will not directly interact with the vancomycin because the Vancomycin is not being absorbed into your system. It is meant to sit in your GI tract and kill the bad bacteria that reside there. However, most doctors will tell you that you should not consume alcohol during this period. Alcohol is an irritant to the GI tract and irritating an already infected part of your body is never a good idea. While not causing a direct interaction with the medication, the alcohol can cause serious pain and discomfort as well as possible serious damage to your body. Please contact your prescribing doctor to see what is recommended, this advice is not a substitute for the advice of your personal doctor.
