Is It Normal To Have Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy After A Reconstructive Knee Surgery?

My 17 year old daughter has been diagnosed with RSD following a reconstructive knee surgery in 2012. She has had 7 sympathetic nerve blocks with no results but to worsen her pain. Her nerve pain is spreading and yesterday started to feel tingly in her left side of her face. (the left knee was what was operated on.) Her primary care Dr. suggested a ct scan to rule out a misdiagnosis and ms. Can a neurologist confirm an RSD diagnosis?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted the symptoms of your daughter, and I agree with your primary care doctor, that alternate diagnosis should be excluded.

This is because reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) is not common after reconstructive knee surgery.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the conditions that should be excluded in your daughter. For this purpose, MRI scan of brain and spine would be preferred over CT scan.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Best wishes,
