Is Ketogenic Diet Helpful In Patients With Brain Tumors?

Hi, Can you tell me more about the ketogenic diet. I have a friend battling a 6 year Glioblastoma tumor. She is currently up at the Dana Farber Institute going through a clinical trial and just got accepted into a 2nd trial..called Immunotherapy. I am a certified Health Coach who teaches individuals about a plant based diet. I am not vegan, but believe in the power of plants and disease prevention. My health mentor thinks that my friend should look more into the ketogenic diet b/c of the success rates with it and brain tumors. Any advice? I am in charge of organizing all of the food being brought to her and her family. I had a plan, but not feel like I need to re-think what I am having her friends and volunteers make. Thanks in advance for your input. Caroline :)

Good afternoon Caroline,
Let me assist you with some of these complicated issues still under study. Let me start by explaining simply from memory. Our body normally uses fat, protein and carbohydrate for energy. We have found that by using the byproducts of fat, fasting, very low carbohydrate diet, our body will use ketones (an energy source) for energy. If we produce too many ketones it can be dangerous or it can be medically helpful by means we are only guessing and testing out. We use the ketogenic diet in epilepsy, for example, and it will control seizures.

My advice is to look into ketogenic diets. It has worked miracles for some. You cannot put your entire family on this diet. It is patient specific. This is important to know. You should be able to get a copy of the ketogenic diet from the Farber institute or have someone get it for you.

To research it, I suggest starting with Google Scholar. You must learn the ketogenic diet in order to train people who may bring food gifts or be involved in your friend's care of her Glioblastoma tumor. I say go for it. Use the ketogenic diet on it, if after researching it yourself, you feel comfortable and then discuss it with your friend so she understands. Post a copy by her bedside so visitors are alerted. A ketogenic diet is not easy and no cheating.

I wish you the greatest of success. Keep me posted. Your biggest challenge will keep her from becoming malnourished while ketogenic. Talk to the Institute. Don't take everything on yourself. Take the team approach.

If you are nervous about doing it, come through the specialized virtual portal and ask for me. We will work on it together. Warm wishes to a kind and supportive heart - Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
