Large Lump At Base Of Neck, Pain In Arm, Tingling And Numbness. Looks Like Enlarged Lymph Gland. Recommendations?

My friend has a large lump at the base of his neck in the back just where the base of the neck meets the back. He is having pain down his left arm, cannot hold anything in his hand that is heavy, tingling and numbness down his left arm also. He is Chinese and does not want to see a Doctor because he does not have Insurance or a good job. I just found out about it today and looked at it. It looks like an enlarged lymph gland, but is about 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" and is very tender. It is raised about a 16th of an inch, maybe a little more. I am concerned for him as he works extremely hard chopping, cooking in a Chinese Restaurant. He is visibly in a lot of discomfort.??!!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us

Well, without a clinical evaluation it would be difficult to determine the cause of the lump. Possibilities that may need to be considered include enlarged lymph node, lipomas, cysts, growths from underlying connective tissue etc. Pain in arm, tingling and numbness could be due to pressure over nerve fibres due to this lump.
I would suggest getting this evaluated by a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. He may get the X-ray of the area affected and FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology) of lump under his/her guidance.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
