Need Suggestions To Reduce Blisters On The Lips

I have had a fever blister on my lip, well several, since Oct. That would be 4 months. I was treated with an anti viral medication, but 1 week after treatment they returned. Should I seek additional medical treatment or do they just run the course. The sore is very painful and nothing seems to help.

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic.

Fever blisters or herpes labialis is notorious for its tendency to recur. Recurrences are frequent in case of recent infection and they become progressively less recurrent with time.

If the recurrences are far and few then they need to be treated only episodically. However if the recurrences are spaced closely/frequently then it is advisable to take a suppressive antiviral therapy e.g acyclovir for upto an year.

Pain and swelling seems to suggest secondary bacterial infection, which can be treated with an oral antibiotic e.g Amoxycillin or Cefadroxil, for a week along with topical OTC antibacterial like 2% mupirocin, twice daily.
