Shin Injury, Painful, Bruised. Taken Aleve. Need An X Ray?

Hi, I think i already have some answers. I fell forward on our deck stairs Tuesday and most of my weight landed on my right shin (I'm a large lady). My shins hit one of the risers when I just missed a step. I can walk (1.5 miles today, not sure how smart that was) and feel better when I'm moving around. But when I lie down and move my foot in such a way that extends whatever muscle goes over the shin - whoa - had me in tears. So I think it is a shin bone bruise. I took a couple of Aleve. Can't ice much because it hurts to touch it. I expect to visit Urgent Care Thursday, will I need an x-ray?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

It is very obvious from the description that you have suffered a soft tissue contusion. As you are walking normally, Xray of the injured area is not necessary.

The general treatment guidelines are as follows -
* Give rest to the injured part and don't do any activities which produces pain
* Keep your leg in elevation most of the time
* Wrap an elastic compression bandage around the injured area
* Ice pack the area once in 2-3 hours
* Gentle massage of the area with pain killer creams will help in reducing the pain & inflammation.
* Once the acute pain subsides, apply moist heat fomentation over the area to relax the underlying muscles.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
