Hi,
Welcome to health care magic and thanks for asking.
After going through the clinical history and laboratory findings, my opinion is as follows:
1. At 71 years age, 62 mm thickness is high
2. Recommendation for biopsy is anything more than 4mm.
3. Expected to be atrophic at this age and this thickness definitely is high risk and biopsy is necessary to rule out cancer.

Yes, it is serious.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
