Should I Get An Xray Done For Pain In Finger On Touching?

About 3 months ago I feel while getting out of the car and tried to grab hold of the door with my right hand. I bent my middle finger between first and second knuckle. it is really painful to touch this area. I am able to bend and type. It is possible that I have a small fracture on the side of finger?
Do need I need to get xray or can I just tape it up with my ring finger to avoid moving it? And if I do this with the tape - will it final stop hurting?
