Should Actilax Be Taken Forever To Avoid Constipation After Abdominal Surgery For Bowel And Bladder?

Have recently had abdominal surgery for a bowel and bladder prolapse. To avoid constipation am taking 30ml Actilax in morning before breakfast. Maybe TOO successful. Suggestions? Do I take it forever? Been advised to never let myself be constipated. Would appreciate advice. Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per the standard surgical protocols, acute constipation is to be avoided with the help of laxative to avoid constipation and straining at a surgical site.

It does not mean that you have to continue laxative round the week for rest of life.

Under the guidance of the surgeon, the dose tapering is carried out for the laxative use to avoid dependency and drug resistance as well.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
