I have been taking metoprolol for the last 10+yrs prescribed by my then cardiologist. As a result of a nuclear stress test last week which showed positive. results, this different cardiologist prescribed Imdur 30 mg. daily. Should I be taking both medications? I am 72 yrs old,w/family hx.of severe heart disease. Thank you.

Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your safety concern for the combination of Metoprolol and Imdur (Isosorbide mononitrate).

Incomplete data like the purpose for taking Metoprolol.
You can both the medications together.

Metoprolol is a cardioselective beta blocker. It decreases the heart rate and thus the work load on the heart. It is used in a number of heart conditions like high BP, arrhythmia, heart failure, angina pectoris etc.

Imdur (isosorbide mononitrate) is an organic nitrate. It widens blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow through them and easier for the heart to pump. Imdur is used to prevent angina attacks or chest pain due to decreased blood supply to the heart.

There is no documented evidence of interaction between the two and hence can be used in the treatment of ischemic heart disease (angina).

Hope this answers your query.
