Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Small Child, Breathlessness, Suprasternal Retractions When Taking Deep Breaths, Circumoral Cyanosis. Cause Of Worry?
My 7 year old son presents with shortness of breath, suprasternal retractions when taking deep breaths- he complains of not being able to get enough breath in . this has happened on and off for the past 2-3 months. Tonight these symptoms are accompanied by circumoral cyanosis . His HR is 88, RR 30-40 BPM. Should I be concerned? He is 95% height and weight for his age, very active in many activities, rarely sick
The symptoms that you describe warrant that you consult a doctor. With a respiratory rate of 30-40/min. the heart rate should have been higher. Secondly, circumoral cyanosis cannot be present alone. There must be generalized cyanosis if there is circumoral cyanosis. Thirdly, the supersternal retractions and breathlessness can be due to bronchoconstriction. The doctor shall examine your son and manage him accordingly.
I hope I have answered your queries to your satisfaction.
