Small Child, Coughing, Vomiting, Burning In Eyes, Headache, Fever. Flu Symptoms Or Sinus Infection?
Took 5 year old daughter to Dr today she tested negative for flu symptoms just started today. She had an upper respiratory infection week b4 last. Has been coughing for a week. Started running fever at school and threw up. Mucus is clear and she says her head hurts and eyes burn . Dr says its flu. Could it be a secondary sinus infection due to previous cold? Fever was just 102.7 with tylenol taken at 5 I just have her some Advil at 9. I m just worried cause were treating as a virus and wondered if she needs antibiotics. No blood work.was done and no srep.test, only flu test.
Thank you for posting on HCM
From your description especially with the fact that she presented with upper respiratory tract infection about a week ago, it is likely possible for her to be having a lower respiratory tract infect infection such as pneumonia, acute bronchitis and other lower lung affections. Pneumonia or acute bronchitis could be due to viral or bacterial infection. If viral, then a couple of days plus management of fever and pain with analgesics (as already done with tylenol and advil) will suffice to do away with the infection.
But in my humble opinion, bacterial infection is most likely the cause. Consulting with a pediatrician to evaluate and provide a proper course of antibiotics will be the best way to proceed. Blood work and possible chest x-ray might be needed.
Hi
Thanks for your query.
Your daughter is having fever, headache, burning eyes all these are features of viral infection.
and will take few days to settle.
I suggest you to continue with paracetamol till fever is above 100F,give her plenty of fluids.coconut water, glucose water ,fruitsand soft bland diet so as to maintain hydration and nutrition.
She should take adequate rest.
In case symptoms persist then you can get pediatric consultation for lab tests and management accordingly.
Hello
According to the symptoms described its more in favor of viral. Beside flu test, complete blood count will also help in differentiating viral from bacterial infection.
There may be some sinus inflammation also during viral infection which usually subsides on its own by conservative management only.
Both tylenol and advil are antipyratics. Better you give only tylenol to control the temperature.
Wait for 48 to 72 hours and get a blood count done. If condition does not improves or worsens and blood count is suggestive also give antibiotics after consulting your doctor.
